A multi-religious monument soaring into the clouds
Rising high above the town of Gampola, Ambuluwawa Tower is a striking white spire perched on the summit of Ambuluwawa Mountain. At 3,567 feet above sea level, it stands as a unique testament to religious harmony, incorporating structural styles of a Buddhist Stupa, a Hindu Kovil, a Muslim Mosque, and a Christian Church.
The tower is famous for its narrow spiral staircase that wraps around the outside of the cone. As you climb higher, the stairs become increasingly narrow, and the winds grow stronger. At the highest accessible levels, the staircase is barely wide enough for a single person, making the climb a heart-pounding adventure for thrill-seekers.
If you are brave enough to ascend to the top, you are rewarded with a dramatic 360-degree view. On clear days, you can see the Knuckles Mountain Range, Pidurutalagala, Bible Rock, and Sri Pada (Adam's Peak).
The tower is situated within the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, Sri Lanka's first multi-religious sanctuary. In addition to the tower itself, the mountaintop features peaceful gardens, a small lake, and separate shrines for Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, emphasizing unity and peaceful coexistence.
