Bible Rock (Bathalegala)

The flat-topped fortress dominating the Sabaragamuwa plains

📍 Distance 10 km
⏱️ Travel Time ~25 Mins
🚶‍♂️ Best Way TukTuk & Hike
🏔️ Difficulty Moderate

With its unique flat-topped silhouette resembling an open book, Bible Rock—locally known as Bathalegala—is a prominent geological landmark. Rising sharply to a height of 797 meters (2,615 feet), it offers hikers a fantastic adventure with some of the most rewarding views in the central hills.

The Hiking Trail

The trek up Bible Rock is moderately challenging but accessible to most travelers with average fitness. The journey starts through lush green village gardens, rubber plantations, and patches of forest, eventually leading to a rocky path. Near the top, a series of stone-carved stairs and guide rails help you navigate the steeper rock face.

The entire hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit, depending on your pace. The trail is rich in local birdlife and flora, making it as much a nature walk as a physical climb.

The Summit Plateau

Once at the summit, you'll walk onto a broad, grassy plateau. The wind here is fresh and cooling, carrying away the heat of the climb. From the edges, the land drops away vertically, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys, tea estates, and neighboring mountains like Utuwankanda and the Kadugannawa Pass. A small, peaceful Buddhist monastery is situated on the plateau, adding a sense of serenity to the summit.

Traveler Tips for Guests

  • Start Early: Begin your hike by 6:30 AM or 7:00 AM. This ensures you climb in the cool morning air and avoid the intense heat of the midday sun.
  • Water & snacks: There are no shops on the mountain, so carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person and some energy snacks.
  • Footwear: Wear hiking shoes or trainers with good grip. The rock surfaces can be slippery, especially if there has been rain.
