A sanctuary dedicated to the care of orphaned Asian elephants
Established in 1975 to care for and protect orphaned wild elephants found lost in the jungles of Sri Lanka, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has grown to become one of the most popular and beloved wildlife attractions in the country, caring for a herd of dozens of elephants.
The highlight of a visit to Pinnawala is witnessing the entire herd walk across the road and down to the Maha Oya River for their daily baths. Watching elephants of all sizes, from giants to tiny calves, playing, splashing, and socializing in the running water is a truly breathtaking sight.
The riverbanks are lined with cafes and viewing platforms, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing drink or lunch while watching this magnificent wildlife spectacle unfold just yards away.
Inside the orphanage grounds, you can observe daily bottle-feeding sessions where the youngest orphaned calves are fed milk by the mahouts. Visitors have the opportunity to see how the team of caretakers looks after these gentle giants, learn about their habits, and support elephant conservation efforts in Sri Lanka.
